Author of New York Court of Appeals’ Jurisdiction Dies

Anyone who has argued at the New York Court of Appeals has inevitably referred to the treatise on the Court’s jurisdiction: “The Powers of the New York Court of Appeals.” Its co-author, Arthur Karger, died last week: see article in New York Lawyer. The treatise is used by not only practitioners, but the Court itself to explain the complexities of the Court’s jurisdiction. Arthur Karger was Judge Lehman’s law secretary (judicial clerk) and later worked for the Court itself, among other things.

As a little piece of Court trivia, Judge Cardozo also wrote a short treatise on the Court’s jurisdiction.

Thanks Meredith.
